Times are challenging and there is no clear visibility on the next big business opportunity for the Indian IT industry. Despite the current situation, Infosys CEO S Gopalakrishnan expressed optimism about the industry’s prospects in a chat with ET.

How will the economic situation impact the IT industry?

I am very optimistic about the Indian IT services sector and it more profitable compared to the global IT industry. Today, it is a mature industry. It has been operating for more than 25 years and has withstood tremendous pressure. We are very positive that the industry will emerge from this crisis. We are going through a slow period... it is probably not over and may be a prolonged slowdown.

What are the business opportunities for Infosys in the present environment?

There are good business opportunities in mergers and integration amid the challenging environment. Secondly, we will advise companies on their technology spending. Despite the consolidation of IT services vendors, we will continue to attract business due to our good relationships, track record and a strong balance sheet.

Will Infosys theme be “cheaper, better and faster”?

When we talk about being cheaper, it is about providing more value and not necessarily being just cheap. We will always be better and faster and this positioning has not changed.
