CANNING (WB): Five persons have been
arrested in connection with the killing of an adult tiger whose carcass was
found floating in a river in the Sundarbans earlier this week.
The
five were arrested late last night from various places in Gosaba, adjacent to
the tiger reserve in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district with the help of
the police, Niraj Singhal, field director of Sundarbans Tiger Reserve,
said.
"Interrogation is on and we are hopeful of a breakthrough which
will help bust the poaching operation in the tiger reserve," he
said.
The body, he said, will not be buried as is the norm but will
be preserved.
Tourists had spotted the dead animal on Monday and
informed the forest department. During the post mortem at the Alipore zoo, a
bullet was found in the animal's head.
